The Department of Economics of the Government College of Commerce and Economics, Borda-Margao organised a workshop on ‘First Aid during an Emergency’ on 22nd October, 2022 for the staff and students of the College. Dr. Brendan Peroz, M.D. Pathology, MBBS and Faculty at Goa Medical College, Bambolim was the Resource Person.
Prof. (Dr.) Filipe Rodrigues e Melo, Principal of the College welcomed the resource person and participants.
Dr. Brendan Peroz stressed on the need to maintain a first aid kit in every home and Institution and elaborated on the contents of the First Aid Kit Box. He stressed that in the event of a heart attack, the focus should be on ABC viz. Airway, Breathing and Circulation. He demonstrated the procedure for performing CPR
He then introduced the audience to CPR and with the help of a student from the audience he demonstrated the procedure to give CPR when a person collapses. He said that the immediate need is to call for professional medical help, meanwhile try to arouse the patient, check for pulse, see for chest rise, etc. He also highlighted that during CPR, chest compressions have to be given 120/min, the compression has to be two inches deep with effective recoil, thereby focusing on ABC i.e. Airway, Breathing and Circulation. He then elaborated on the first aid to be rendered during other medical emergencies such as Status epilepticus, when someone gets a seizure, status asthamaticus, when someone gets an exacerbation of asthama, how to handle a road traffic accident victim, treatment of a snake bite, dog bite, diarrhoea, choking and also demonstrated the Heimlich maneuver.
The programme was organised and co-ordinated by Ms. Farah Mendonca and Dr. Elizabeth Henriques of the Department of Economics of the College. The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Ms. Saloni Sharma, student of the First Year BCom.
