Participation in Student Parliament Competition 2025

Overview of the Competition

The Student Parliament Competition 2025 aimed to provide a platform for students to engage in parliamentary debates, enhance public speaking skills, and develop a deeper understanding of democratic processes. The event brought together students from various colleges across Goa to deliberate on pertinent socio-political issues.

Participation from Our College

A total of 29 students from our college enthusiastically participated in the competition, representing our institution with diligence, eloquence, and commendable parliamentary decorum. They showcased a comprehensive understanding of diverse topics and engaged in constructive dialogue, demonstrating their preparation and commitment.

Pre-Competition Training

Prior to the event, students underwent rigorous training sessions conducted by our faculty. These sessions focused on:

Developing debating skills and public speaking confidence.
Enhancing knowledge of parliamentary procedures.
Conducting thorough research on contemporary socio-political issues.

The training instilled confidence and equipped students with the necessary tools to articulate their viewpoints effectively during the competition.

One Day Workshop on 3D Printing Technology

In preparation for the BNI Meet, Mr. Ryan Vaz, Founder of 3D Infinity and BNI Member, addressed the students on February 3, 2025, in their respective classrooms to provide insights into business networking.

Talk on Living with Wildlife

Date of Event: January 30, 2025

The session was delivered by Mr. Benhail Antao, Honorary Wildlife Warden with the Forest Department of Goa, Wildlife Rescuer and Conservationist, and featured expert on *Snakes SOS: Goa's Wildest* on National Geographic Channel.

Objectives of the Event

To educate participants about the crucial role of wildlife in maintaining ecological balance and preserving biodiversity.

Key Points Covered

The significance of wildlife in ecological balance.
Human-wildlife conflict and measures to mitigate it.
The role of conservation efforts in sustaining biodiversity.
Common misconceptions about snakes and other wildlife.

The talk was highly interactive, with students actively participating in discussions and posing insightful questions. Mr. Antao shared his experiences of wildlife rescue operations, making the session engaging and informative. A total of 60 students attended the talk.

The session successfully raised awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation. Students gained valuable insights into the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the necessity of preserving biodiversity.

Participation of College Students in the Save Wetlands Campaign

The students and faculty of Government College, Borda actively participated by taking the Wetland-Mitra-Pledge. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about the crucial role of wetlands in maintaining ecological balance and to encourage active involvement in conservation efforts.

Date and Venue: The pledge-taking ceremony was conducted on 20/01/2025 in the college seminar hall.

Inaugural Session Highlights

Welcome Address: Prof. Dr. F. M. Nadaf, Principal, highlighted the challenges of the digital age and the importance of meaningful discussions.
Chief Guest: Prof. Dr. Harilal Menon, Vice Chancellor of Goa University, described the digital space as complex and interconnected. He spoke on ethics in technology, cyberbullying, and the role of NEP in technology-driven education.
Keynote Address: Dr. Rakhi Tripathi, Associate Professor, FORE School of Management, outlined social media’s transformative potential, emphasizing content creation and ethical engagement.

The XII Annual Day and Prize Distribution Ceremony was held on 13th April 2023 at 10:30 a.m. in the College Hall. The Chief Guest for the day was Prof. Malapati K. Janarthanam, an eminent educationist with an iconic stature who is currently the Chairperson of Goa State Research Foundation.

The compere for the day was Dr. Monica Patil, Assistant Prof. of English. The students welcomed the Chief Guest with a rhythmic dance performance. Prof. (Dr.) Filipe Rodrigues e Melo, Professor and Principal of the College welcomed the Chief Guest in his adroitly delivered speech. Ms. Farah Mendonca, Assistant Professor of Economics offered the Chief Guest a potted plant as a tribute of love and gratitude and introduced Professor Malapati K. Janarthanam to the gathering which was followed by the ceremony of lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. The Annual Report 2022-2023 consisting of various achievements, academic, socio- cultural and extension activities by the faculty and students was meticulously read out by the Principal.

The Department of Commerce of Government College of Commerce and Economics, Borda organized a One Day State Level Workshop on NEP 2020 Syllabus of Skill Enhancement Courses in the subjects of Soft Skills and Personality Development, Business Documentation, Innovation & Start-Ups on 5th July 2023.

The principal of the college Prof. Dr. F. M. Nadaf appreciated the initiative taken by the Commerce Department to conduct the workshop and said that such workshop is much needed because of the implementation of the NEP 2020 as it brings clarity about the topics to be covered in the syllabus. Dr. Maria Fatima de Souza- Head of the department of Commerce then briefed the participants about the workshop. The resource persons for the workshops were Mr. John Silveira for the subject Soft Skills and Personality Development, Ms. Sneha Menon for the subject Business Documentation and Mr. Damodar Patnekar for the subject Innovation & Start-Ups. NEP 2020 essence is identifying, recognising, fostering unique capabilities of students and then transforming this capacity into capabilities which harnesses job skills, life skills, character and Nation building. It is in this context that the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the College organised a Two-Day Workshop on “Certification and Assessment Development” on the 10th and 12th of May 2023 for the faculty of the College.

The workshop was conducted by Mr.Kishore Shah – Director ideaz Unlimited Managing Trustee GDP Foundation a renowned Master Talent Analyst- Chally Ohio USA & Organization Development consultant of international repute and Mr.Saiesh Naik – Simulation expert. In the Valedictory function the Principal, Prof. Filipe Rodrigues e Melo distributed the certificates to the faculties. The workshop covered topics such as Assessment Lab overview, Competency Based Assessment, ADC Macro set up, How to script a IDP, Simulations IRP & GRP, Indoor & Outdoor : group activities, Psychometrics.

The Department of Commerce organized a Book Release and Certificate Distribution Ceremony on 12th November 2022 at 10:30 am in the college seminar hall. The chief guest for the function was Prof. Dr. F. M. Nadaf- Asst. Director of Education, Directorate of Higher Education. Principal congratulated the department of Commerce for conducting many short term certificate courses, inter-collegiate activities and also for the release of a book and the college research journal QUEST. He also spoke about the New Education Policy and how it is going to bring about changes in the education system. Chief Guest Dr. F. M. Nadaf spoke about the importance of NEP 2020 and how the NEP is going to benefit the students by allowing them to pursue a wide area of subjects. He said that the NEP 2020 WOULD BE IMPLEMENTED IN Goa from the next academic year in different phases and that clusters would be formed and each cluster would comprise of different colleges from a particular area. He said that a student can chose colleges from a particular cluster if he or she wants to opt for different subjects of his or her liking. He also mentioned that the NEP would bring about changes in the education system in India. He also said that a student will receive a certificate after completing each year of studying at the bachelor’s level. He also congratulated the department of commerce for organizing various certificate courses and competitions and events for the students as this would increase their employability.

Department of Commerce of Government College of Commerce & Economics Borda Margao in Collaboration of ICAI, Goa Branch organized a session on Career in Chartered Accountancy for the students on 15th October 2022. CA Prasheel Kamat was the chief guest for the session. The Session began with the formal welcome of the chief guest. At the outskirt, Dr. Maria Fatima D’Souza, HOD, Department of Commerce introduced the chief guest and welcomed the speaker with a flower. The session was divided in two Parts: Part 1: Chartered Accountancy as a career option. Part 2: Session on GST Part 1: Chartered Accountancy as a career option. The session commenced with a brief introduction about ICAI. Mr Prasheel, explained the procedure to get enroll for CA Course. In the session, he threw a light on Fee Structure, ICAI scholarships, ICAI publications, study material and career opportunities for CAs in the job market. The resource person highlighted some of the famous quotes and Prominent Chartered Accountants in the country. The speaker ended the first session by discussing “A Mantra “for becoming a CA and urged the students to work hard towards achieving the goal. The Government College of Commerce and Economics organized a Drawing Workshop for the children of Borda Anganwadi and Vidhyanagar Anganwadi on 22nd October 2022. The workshop began at 10:00 a.m. Dr. Fatima De Souza first welcomed all the children and their teachers for the workshop. The program commenced with the introduction of each student. A number of activities were held for the students such as singing, dancing, storytelling, action songs etc. Our college students and teachers also showed the children some dances. The children were also asked what they would like to become when they grew up. This was followed by the drawing workshop. Colorful papers and colours were given to the children for drawing. The children were helped by our college students for the drawing. This was followed by a few games conducted for the children. Refreshments were served to the children. Each student was given a compass box as a token in memory of our Late Principal Prof. Gajanand Madiwal. Dr. Fatima then thanked the organizers, the teachers and students of our college for their active participation and also the staff and children of the two Anganwadis. A total of 13 children participated in the workshop who was accompanied by their teachers and other staff. Overall the program was a grand success and it brought smiles to the children and all those present. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Maria Fatima De Souza and Asst. Prof. Jonlen DeSa.

The Consumer Welfare Cell of the college organised “Consumer Fest” on 21st October, 2022 in the college campus between at 10:15 am to 11.15 am. The students had put stalls selling various products ranging from food & beverage, bakery items, fashion accessories, crochet items, macrame items, Diwali sweets and decorations, etc. In total there were 20 stalls. The stalls were kept busy and entertaining many students and teachers. The participants enjoyed and some even complimented the organisers for coming up with this whole idea. The purpose of conducting this event was to create entrepreneurial interest among the students. Ms. Riva Paes, Assistant Professors of Commerce coordinated the Programme.

A talk on “Identifying Sexual Harassment through Body Language” was organized by the Internal Complaints Committee of the College on 21st October 2022 in the Seminar Hall from 9.30 am to 10.30 am. The F.Y.B.Com (A) and F.Y. B.Com (B) participated for the talk along with the teachers. A total of 65 students participated for the talk. The Resource person for the session was Ms. Kanan Tandi, who is an expert in Body Language and India’s first Micro Expression Decoding Trainer. She enlightened the students on the six stages of sexual grooming viz. targeting a victim; Gaining trust; Filling a Need; Access and separation; Abuse and Maintaining Control. She threw light on different ways of identify sexual harassment and also how to react in a particular situation. She gave practical examples while explaining to the students. The Programme was co-ordinated by Ms. Lily Endro, Assistant Prof. of Commerce and Member of the ICC. Ms.Bindiya Naik, College Librarian and member of the ICC proposed the Vote of Thanks.

The Department of Economics of the Government College of Commerce and Economics, Borda-Margao organised a workshop on ‘First Aid during an Emergency’ on 22nd October, 2022 for the staff and students of the College. Dr. Brendan Peroz, M.D. Pathology, MBBS and Faculty at Goa Medical College, Bambolim was the Resource Person. Prof. (Dr.) Filipe Rodrigues e Melo, Principal of the College welcomed the resource person and participants. Dr. Brendan Peroz stressed on the need to maintain a first aid kit in every home and Institution and elaborated on the contents of the First Aid Kit Box. He stressed that in the event of a heart attack, the focus should be on ABC viz. Airway, Breathing and Circulation. He demonstrated the procedure for performing CPR He then introduced the audience to CPR and with the help of a student from the audience he demonstrated the procedure to give CPR when a person collapses. He said that the immediate need is to call for professional medical help, meanwhile try to arouse the patient, check for pulse, see for chest rise, etc. He also highlighted that during CPR, chest compressions have to be given 120/min, the compression has to be two inches deep with effective recoil, thereby focusing on ABC i.e. Airway, Breathing and Circulation. He then elaborated on the first aid to be rendered during other medical emergencies such as Status epilepticus, when someone gets a seizure, status asthamaticus, when someone gets an exacerbation of asthama, how to handle a road traffic accident victim, treatment of a snake bite, dog bite, diarrhoea, choking and also demonstrated the Heimlich maneuver. The programme was organised and co-ordinated by Ms. Farah Mendonca and Dr. Elizabeth Henriques of the Department of Economics of the College. The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Ms. Saloni Sharma, student of the First Year BCom.

The Consumer Welfare Cell in Collaboration with GOACAN observed World Standards Day on 14th October, 2022 in the college Seminar Hall at 12:30 pm to 2.00 pm. A session was organized for the college students and staff on the theme: “Consumer Rights and responsibilities for quality control of goods and services in Goa”. The welcome address was given by the principal, Prof. (Dr.) Filipe Rodrigues e Melo. He introduced the Resource Person and gave an overview of the Programme. The resource person for the programme was Mr. Roland Martins. He highlighted various examples of consumers being cheated and called on the students to be aware, to check and to share the information including the rights as listed under the Consumer Protection Act. He also said that the consumer has six rights to the Act: right to safety, be informed, choose, be heard, seek redressal and consumer awareness. It is our duty and responsibility to access our rights, to file complaints and to seek redressal. Through this we as consumers can also work to get better quality from what we are buying. There are procedures in place under the Act. To get improvement in service, we as consumers have to be alert. The presentation was followed by the Question & Answer session by the participants. Vote of Thanks was proposed by Assistant Professor Ms. Riva Ritinha Paes. The Entire Programme was coordinated by Dr. Fatima De Souza, HOD and Ms. Riva Ritinha Paes, Assistant Professor of Commerce. The Department of Economics organised an Inter-Collegiate Debate Competition on the Theme “Freebies: Social Welfare or an Economic Waste?” The debate was organised on the 7th of October 2022. It evoked an overwhelming response from students of different colleges with 09 colleges participating in the debate. The programme began with the Principal of the College, Prof. (Dr.) Filipe Rodrigues e Melo welcoming the moderator, judges and the participants. He elaborated on the theme of the debate and complimented the faculty of the Department of Economics for selecting a relevant topic for debate and discussion. While Mr. Dilip Prabhudessa, an engineer by profession, social activist and the vice-president of a political party in the state of Goa was the Moderator; the judges for the debate included Dr. Sachin Savio Moraes, Faculty-Parvati Chowgule College, Margao; Mr. Kishor Naik Gaonkar, Editor of the GoanVarta Live News Channel and Ms. Shirley Sousa-Lawyer and Academician. Each college was represented by a team comprising of two members-one speaking in favour of the motion and the other opposing the motion. The Goa College of Engineering, Farmagudi won the debate while V.M Salgaocar College of Law, Miramar was declared the Runners-Up. Ms. Vaishnavi S, student of the V.M Salgaocar College of Law was awarded the Best Debator (Proposition) and Master Azvern Dias representing the Goa Engineering College was declared the Best Debator (Opposition) The Moderator and judges also shared their viewpoints on the topic of the debate and also gave feedback on the debate. Ms. Farah Mendonca, Assistant Prof. of Economics proposed the vote of thanks. The programme ended with the singing of the National Anthem. The programme was compered by Master Farid Khan Pathan, Student of TYBCom and was co-ordinated by Dr. Elizabeth J. Henriques, Associate Prof and Head of the Department of Economics.

She also mentioned that the firm conducts certificate courses in capital markets of three levels i.e Basic, Fundamentals and Technical. The resource person then introduced the concept of shares and stock and explained the concept of stock exchange along with the different stock exchanges in India and abroad. She also explained the various stock market indices and the participants in the stock market. She then spoke about market capitalization and the role of SEBI. This was followed by a brief introduction on crypto currency. A total of 42 students and alumni attended the webinar. The webinar was coordinated by Asst. Prof. Jonlen DeSa.

AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON BANKING EXAMS on 09th November 2021 was organised by the Department of Commerce for the T.Y.B.Com students of the College. The basic objective of this program was to give direction to students who aspire to do their career in banking sector. The resource person for the program was Mr. Malcolm Dias, Director, T.I.M.E, Goa. The resource person focused in the session on the career options in Banking sector, IBPS PO, Clerk, SO, SBI PO/Clerk Prelims and Mains banking exams, requirements for preparation for banking exams and so on. Guidance was given to students on the significance on English language, current affairs, mathematics, logical reasoning etc. in clearing the competitive banking exams. The session was attended by 84 students. Programme Co-ordinator was Ms. Rupali V. Sangodkar. Dr. Maria Fatima De Souza was the Programme Convenor.

The Skill Development Cell in collaboration with Department of Commerce of Government College of Commerce & Economics, Borda, Margao – Goa, had organised Creative writing Competition as a part of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” for the students of the College on 13th August, 2022. The Theme for competition was “75 Years of India’s Independence”. This competition gave students a platform to learn how to express their ideas and views in different ways. Students were encouraged to express their creative ideas and pen them down in form of beautiful essays, poetry and slogans.

The Extension Cell of Government College of Commerce and Economic, Borda in collaboration with Nave Marg foundation conducted survey of people with diabetes and blood pressure in order start a yoga training club and help them manage and live happily with diabetes. The survey was conducted through Google Form which was circulated among the college students through WhatsApp groups. A total of 103 students responded to the google form. It was found that 27 parents were taking medication for diabetes and 37 for taking medication for Blood pressure.

The College Extension Cell and Department of Commerce in collaboration with Goa Forest Department, Research and Utilization Division, Aquem, Margao-Goa of the College organized “Plants/Orchard Trees Distribution Mela” on 2nd August, 2022 at 10:30am. in the College Campus Mr. Narayan Vaigankar, Range Forest Office was the chief guest. The Principal Prof. Gajanan Madiwal, presided over the function. Head of the Department and convenor of extension cell Dr. Maria Fatima De Souza addressed the gathering. Mr. Vaigankar, highlighted on the importance of plants to the environment. He said that the youngsters and the students need to know the utility of plantation. Just planting of trees is not enough but we must be actively involved in growing and preserving the plant species. Around 500 saplings were distributed among the staff and students. The Department of Economics organised an Interactive Session cum Talk on the topic Waste Management on 19th August, 2022 from 12.00 to 1.00 pm. for the students of S.Y.B.COM. The Resource Person for the Session was Ms. Shraddha Parag Rangnekar, Project Coordinator for Mineral Foundation of Goa on ‘Plastic Waste Management’, supported by the United Nations Development Programme, India. The Interactive Session cum Talk commenced with a welcome address and introduction of the resource person by Assistant Professor in Economics, Ms. Farah Felizinha Mendonca, followed by Ms. Shraddha Parag Rangnekar taking over the session to educate the students on different types of waste that could be segregated in their respective homes. She said that at an individual level it is very important to segregate the house waste into wet waste and dry waste which then is further segregated into 16 to 32 different categories by the municipal authorities of a particular town. She then went on to speak about the ill effects of dumping the house waste without segregation, thereby saying that the dumped mixed waste produces harmful chemicals, burning of plastic releases dioxins, various other toxins consumed by animals leading to death, etc. She also quoted findings of research by scientists at NIO which suggests that micro plastic particles have been found in embryo, foetus as well as the food that we consume. Lastly, she spoke about her deep concern for conscious consumerism, because everything that we consume in the economy comes from the nature and that in turn generates waste back into the environment. She stressed on the need to avoid excessive packaging that is not recyclable, ensure reduction of food waste and finally focus on the 4Rs i.e. Reduce, Refuse/Reject, Reuse and Recycle. She pointed out to the students that we share the planet with other beings and so it is our responsibility to protect and preserve the environment. The Vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Sumer Shaikh, student of S.Y.B.COM-A. The session ended at 1.00 pm. A total of 57 students of the S.Y.BCom attended the programme. The programme was co-ordinated by Ms. Farah F. Mendonsa, Assistant Prof. of Economics.

The Department of Economics organised a Talk on Corporate Etiquette and Organisational Structure on the 5th of August, 2022 from 8.30 to 9.30 am. The Resource Person for the Session was Ms. Pooja Maurya, Assistant Manager, Deloitte India, Hyderabad. The Talk commenced with a welcome address by Associate Professor in Economics and Head of Department, Dr. Elizabeth Henriques. Ms. Pooja, a prominent alumni of our college, began the session by sharing her rich experiences of her journey right from pursuing her Bachelors in Commerce degree in the year 2013, where she was selected at a campus interview organised by M.E.S College, Vasco by a very renowned company, Infosys. She further went on to share her 8 years of fruitful experience at various branches of the company and then finally taking the tough decision of leaving Infosys to join Hinduja Global Solutions, where she roughly worked for around 6 months in 2021 and the finally decided to quit the same for a better job prospect at Deloitte India. Speaking about corporate etiquette and organisational structure, she said that every organisation gave her a different yet wide exposure of the work culture so much so at the new appointees are given a training on how to be well groomed (hair & dress code) all the time, their professional greeting style, etc in the corporate world. She motivated the students on, no matter what the challenge is in life there is no turning back. She also shared with them about her experience of how every community including the LGBTQ community is given equal respect for their choices and hence no looking down upon anyone in life. Finally she concluded her session by telling the students to set SMART goals in life which meant S- Systematic, M- Mearurable, A-Achievable, R-Realistic and T-Time bound. She inspired them to be a goal achiever. A Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr. Elizabeth Henriques, where she wished Ms. Pooja a bright future and ended the session by stating that ‘The sky is the limit. It’s just the beginning.’ Sixty nine students of the TYBCom attended the talk.

The Interactive Session cum Talk commenced with the welcome address by Associate Professor in Economics and Head of Department, Dr. Elizabeth Henriques followed by the introduction of the Resource Person by Ms. Farah Felizinha Mendonca, Assistant Professor in Economics. Ms. Huligemma, began the session by sharing her rich experiences of her journey from pursuing her Bachelors in Commerce degree till the present day work scenario. In the course of her talk she elaborated on the remunerative work opportunities available in the insurance sector. She also highlighted that when it comes to jobs in the marketing segment, employees avail the benefits of not just salaries but incentives too. She finally ended the session by conveying to the students that life isn’t easy, and with hard work and sheer determination comes immense success. A Vote of Thanks was proposed by Ms. Wilfreda Fernandes student of T.Y.B.Com. A total of 69 final year students attended the talk.
